The only legimate way for an Au pair to work in the USA is on a J-1 visa obtainable through the US State Department-designated agencies. The official Au Pair Programme allows young women and men aged 18-26 with childcare expereince to work for an American family for exactly 1 Year.
After the first year the Au pair is allowed to extend their stay for a further 6,9 or 12 Months. In the US a summer only Au pair is now possible. Their are two separate programmes one for qualified Child carers/Nannies called teh Au Pair Extraordinaire, Au Pair Elite or Premier Au Pair programme, candidates with the appropriate NNEB, BTEC Diploma in Nursing or NVQ3 qualification are eligible to earn $200 a week plus a $500 study allowance. The other Variation within Au pair programme was introduced in 2002 and named Educare, in which the emphasis is more on study and cultural exchange than on childcare.
