Family Letter:

Dear Host Family,
I am really exited that I have an opportunity to be an au-pair. So why do I even want to be one?
Firstly, I want to say that you can implicitly trust me with your children – I have taken care of children a lot and I have no trouble achieving a positive relationship with children very quickly. I also want to add that you can never know too much about children, they are all different and I believe they have something to offer us - grown-ups. Children are very smart and can teach us as much as we can teach them. I love kids, their thoughts, their laugh, just everything about them.
Secondly, I think it is a very good opportunity for me to become more independent, learn about a different culture and environment. I have never been to America, but I have not traveled almost at all, only to the Baltic and Scandinavian states. My whole childhood I have lived on the little island of Kihnu. As we do not have a high school on Kihnu, I moved to Pärnu when I was 16 years old. After three years in high school I moved to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, and for now, I have lived here almost three years.
I was 12 years old when I started to babysit. My mother's best friend had a son Jannar. Every day after classes I went to their place and looked after him. I bottle-fed him, changed his diapers and put him to sleep. When Jannar was about three years old, the family moved to Sweden. After that we haven't seen each other that much but he still knows who I am. This summer I became his godmother.
I had my next babysitting experience when I was 14 years old. Kairit, my good friend and neighbor, had a son – Indrek. He was only one week old when I started to spend time with him. Every single day after classes and homework I went to their place and helped her with him. I bottle-fed him, changed diapers, and put him to bed, too. I did that basically for two years. When I was in ninth grade, Kairit had a daughter – Merily. I could not spend that much time with her, because I was in the middle of my exams and graduating. After living on my own in Pärnu for one year, I moved in with Kairit. Then she had her third child – Ingar. We lived together for almost a year and I spent time with all three of them. By that time the oldest was five, the girl three, and the youngest one just under a year. During my second year in Pärnu, I also babysat my friend's child for two months. It was a 4 year old boy named Germo. We had a lot of fun, played a lot, learned some colors and numbers, and had some good times in parks.
Shortly after moving to Tallinn, I started attending vocational school to become a hairstylist. I graduated two years later, and a few months after that started working as a hairstylist. Through my work I met a woman whose children I babysat for a few times a week for two months. One of them was a 6 year old boy Sten-Markus, and the other one was a 9 year old boy Jan-Erik.
I am a really good communicator, I usually get along with people in all ages – from babies to elderly people. I am really optimistic, I love to laugh and I like to try different things in my life. My friends have told me that no matter what happens, I have an ability to stay calm and deal with the situation rationally. I am from a little island with a long history of dance and song tradition, so I love to dance and sing our traditional dances and songs.
I think I have something to offer children, and I hope to learn from them, as well.
If you have any more questions, do not hesitate to contact me. I am willing to answer any of your questions.
Yours faithfully,
Nele Vesik
