The Reasons I Want To Be An Au Pair:
|
I am a graduate student in dance and will be in Europe to research how migration and artist mobility effects contemporary dance practices. I would like to extend my stay in Europe. I hope to master French (and need quite a bit of work on it). I am well educated, cultured, good with kids, and very fun. I'm also a great cook of healthy foods, and a vegetarian (though I cook meat as well).
I believe I would be a great au pair for the right family, and I hope that by working as one I will also be able to continue studying dance a bit and networking with dance artists in Europe.

My Interests:
|
I love school, dancing, art, reading, yoga, and hiking. These days, it seems, I most love to read. I consume about two books a week.
I grew up in the Seattle area, with a very close extended family. I am the youngest of three children and the only girl. I am the first member of my family to seek a life in the arts.
I'm a very good, if experimental, cook. I'm best with international fusion fare. I make great Asian inspired dishes. I'm very health conscious and love cooking vegan and vegetarian food. I'm also reasonably talented in the garden.
In the USA, I have a bus driver lisence, which means I'm a safe and conscientious driver. I worked as a tour guide in Alaska, and have also traveled all around the USA, Southeast Asia, Mexico, and will soon travel the Balkans.
I'm very self reliant and live very modestly in the US. It seems to me that the less "stuff" I accumulate, the happier I am.
My life goals are these: To figure out how to survive as a dance artist, to travel extensively, to learn foreign languages, to help foster community networks of socially conscious artists, to teach and mentor dancers, and to facilitate cross cultural discourse through arts events. A "tall order," I know, but I believe in dreaming big.

Family Letter:
|
My name is Lindsey. I am 26 years old, and a Master of Fine Arts
student in Modern Dance, studying at the University of Utah. I grew
up in Seattle, Washington, and went to Western Washington University
for my undergrad, where I self-designed a degree in dance and
community building. I am writing to you about the opportunity to work as an au pair for your family because I am great with children, and am a mentor who fosters empowerment, creativity, and passion for learning. That said, I want to share with you just a little about myself so you can get a feel for who I am.
I teach beginner dance and creative process courses to 18-20 year olds
at the University of Utah. Day in and day out, I see people who do not
consider themselves dancers creating some of the most creative and
ingenious dances I have ever seen. I also see lives change through
dance education. I think that one of the most tragic aspects of
contemporary American life is how distanced from our bodies so many of
us become. My studies in dance have taught me both discipline and
freedom, to live in the present moment and to dream wildly about the
future, to be both grounded and imaginative.
I am passionate about poetry, fiction, hiking, drawing, painting,
textile work, yoga, and travel. I am an adept writer, and I keep a
daily poetry journal. My favorite poetry book at the moment is the
Book of Nightmares by Galway Kinnell. My favorite novel, of all time,
is the Grapes of Wrath. It has been years since I read it, and I have
read many books since then, but nothing has touched me more deeply.
I believe
that learning should be rooted in joy, and that self-empowerment, in
the deepest sense, is about discovering that no opinion about our
selfhood is as important as our own.
I hike weekly, go running almost daily, and also practice yoga. I
first studied yoga in Varanasi, India. I have also traveled for dance
and arts study in Greece, Thailand, and Mexico. In August, I will
travel to the Balkans to complete my thesis research on fellowship
from the Univ of Utah Graduate School. I would love to extend my stay in Europe for a year by working as an au pair. I have taken leave from my graduate program, and will complete my written thesis upon my return.
I hope to find a family of arts and outdoors lovers. I love working with younger children, and my greatest skills are with adolescents between the ages of 11 and 16.
Thank you! I look forward to hearing from you!
