The Reasons I Want To Be An Au Pair:

I simply adore children. I love being around them, playing with them, talking to them, making them smile. And I love how they can make you smile, even when you feel really miserable. Plus, it is a great feeling to see a child grow up. Moreover, I think being an Au Pair is an awesome opportunity to learn something about a new culture and new people, and to improve my English as well.

My Interests:

One of my hobbies is reading. The last book I have finished was Harry Potter - in English. Moreover I love to spend time with my friends. We often meet and go to the restaurant or just watch some movies together. I really like watching movies or a show on TV. I love "Grey's Anatomy", for example. And I love to travel. Last summer, I have been to Egypt and it was great, and in September I was in London with my English class. I love to get to know new cultures and new people all over the world. Since I am a rather creative person, I like to photograph, to write or to draw as well. I used to spend more time doing creative things but school has been very busy these days. For staying healthy, I take a walk with my dog every day, or I do some jogging. I also like to watch sports like Soccer or Basketball on TV. And of course I'm looking forward to learn something about the American sports like Football and Baseball as well :-)

Family Letter:

Dear hostfamily, This letter shall give you an appropriate inside into my character, my life, and my wish to become an Au Pair. I hope it will help you decide whether or not I am the right person to live with you and care for your children. My name is Katharina Niewoehner, and I am a buoyant, humorous and outgoing 18-year-old girl from Germany. I live together with my parents Andrea and Peter, my siblings Lukas and Viktoria (they are twins and 15 years old) and our Golden Retriever “Charlie” in a small village near Hanover. I love spending time with my friends, going for longish walks with my dog, travelling around the world and of course meeting new people. I have been thinking of becoming an Au Pair for years. Everything started when I began to do voluntary work with children in the local parish in 2003. Together with two friends, I took over responsibility for a group of girls at the age of 6 to 11, then. Now, four years later, I still enjoy working with the kids. It is always amazing to see them delight in the simplest things like making a delicious cake all alone or singing some funny songs. It is just incredible how enthusiastic children can be, and this is why I absolutely love being around them. Those girls have become part of my life, I have taken them to my heart and certainly, I will miss them. But I am just as sure that I am going to love your children just the same way once we had the chance to get to know each other. Apart from the work in the parish, I was favored by fortune when in April 2007, a very nice family called me and asked if I wanted to babysit their 3-year-old son. Of course I did! We arranged a meeting for the next day and I remember that I was awfully excited. Though I already did an internship in a kindergarten some years ago, I did not have that much experience with toddlers back then. But it turned out to be just brilliant. Steffi (that’s the mom’s name) and her husband Dirk are two wonderful people, and so is their son Ole. Steffi always says how much she loves to listen to Ole’s and my conversations or to watch us playing together. All the time, she compliments me on how affectionate and loving I am towards her son, and I remember one situation when Ole and I built some kind of rollercoaster with his toy building bricks and Steffi came back from an appointment and was incredibly impressed of my constructiveness :-) I am glad that everything turned out great with Ole. I love reading fantastic tales to him or singing him to sleep. He is a real sweetheart and I will miss him and his parents just as much as they will miss me. Jokingly, they begged me to become their Au Pair and when I said that I wanted to improve my English in the States as well, they even offered to only talk English when I’m around. But they also told me that they are excited about this adventure, too and that they will keep their fingers crossed for me having a marvellous time. Another significant support for me is my family, and especially my mom who is also a very good friend for me. We often just sit together and talk, or we go shopping or to the cinema. I think it is going to be hard for her to let me go, because she has a closer relationship to me than she has to my siblings. But she always says how happy she is that I get the chance to make my dream come true and I know that she and all my other relatives as well will support me in every situation. My grandparents for example are really proud of me and consequently, all our neighbors know by now that I will spend a year abroad :-) Since it is quite important for me to have a close and trustful relationship with the people around me, I would love to not just become your Au Pair but also a close friend for you and a big sister for your child(ren). I hope to hear from you soon, Katharina Niewoehner
