The Reasons I Want To Be An Au Pair:

Bacause it is a calling to me and I like the profession

My Interests:

Let me say something about myself. I was born in a rural village in the Western part of Kenya at a place called Kakamega. My father used to work as a Personnel Officer with Egerton University in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. My mother stayed at home to look after all of us. I was born in a family of 6 children. 3 boys and 3 girls. I am the fourth born in the family. There is one brother and two sisters older than me and a younger brother and sister. When I was six years old and it was time for me to be enrolled in school, I went to live with my father in Nakuru town. In 1978, I had my first child Florence while I was still in School. My parents helped me to take care of Florence until she went to school and then I went back to school and finished my ‘O’Levels. I love dancing ,singing ,cooking, travelling watching movies playing indoor games arobics.

Family Letter:

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing to introduce myself to you as a prospective nanny. My name is Christine Karegi Kisali. I am 46 years old. I am a Christian and very active member of my church. I am a mother of two children. My daughter Florence is 26 and works as a cateress in a hotel in Njoro. Then there is Brian who finished his O’Level in November last year and is still at home waiting for the results of his exams which are due to come out in March. We are all anxiously waiting to see how he has performed. He would like to study law and we all hope that he will pass to enable him do this. I had my second child Brian in 1987 my mother sympathized and was really concerned with this issue she secretly talked to me and my uncle. After a discussion they decided that they were going to help me buy land because she wanted me settle and take care of the little ones, so we bought ¼ of land in Njoro in the Rift Valley just on your way to Egerton University where my dad worked as I have said before. Though we have about five acres of land back in the village she didn’t want me to have problems with my brothers may be after her death, so with the great help of my mother I have put up a permanent three bed roomed house which is enough for me and the children. I love reading, singing, watching movies, music, dancing, traveling and cooking. My father worked with Egerton University for many years before he retired in 1985. He died in 1986 by then we dint have a permanent house to live in so we planned because daddy left all his retired benefits with us so we decided to put up at lest a nice for our mom of which we did in the year 1990. The death of my Father really affected my Mother she developed many complications so most of the weekends I was forced to be traveling home so that I could take care of her but I thank God for my boss Carolyn the last days before my mother died when she was seriously sick I came and talked to her about the situation and she was very kind to me she took leave to stay with Angela at home so I went to stay with my mother in the hospital this was the most difficult time for me but through prayer I got encouraged until I saw her die on the 17th day of September last year in 2006. During the period that I was at home looking after Florence my parents thought it was not a good thing for me to be idle for so long and so I was an apprentice at a printing firm for two years where I learnt Book Binding and print finishing. I used to go in the afternoons but when Florence joined Primary school, the firm gave me a job as a Binder Assistant. It was during this period that I was able to save money to enable me go back to school. After I finished school, I worked for 3 years 1988 to 1990 as a Binder Assistant but one day, my boss needed a House girl and I volunteered to help until he could get one. Their house girl had to leave suddenly to care for a sick mother. That was the beginning of my love for working with children. My boss, Mr. David Nguti had two small children aged 2 and 4. Their mother was a teacher. I stayed with this family for the next 8 years. During this period I gained much experience in child care since most of the time I was left alone to take care of the children. Besides child care I learnt how to bring the up in good morals. I also gained experience in several other duties like cooking, washing, doing general cleaning, attending to the gardens and flowers, attending to sick children and other daily routines including shopping and traveling. From that time, I have never looked back and since then, all my jobs since have involved children and housework. I have since then worked as a maid and severally even volunteered in Children’s Homes and Centers. The most recent job I held that involved the care of Children was with Ms Caroline Olali. This lady contacted me after she was given a recommendation by a friend of the Nguti’s. She was expecting her third child and she needed help as she was sickly during her pregnancy and is also in full time employment as a librarian in a university. I went to live with her family between 2002 to 2006. I helped her during her confinement and helped her with her baby Angela, until the child was 3 years old. I am still in contact with this family and the lady calls me often when she needs help with Birthday parties or when she has guests. In addition to this, I have attachment with Early Childhood Development school where Angela schools situated nearby. I visit them from time to time, play with them and then get back. enclosed find the photos. The reason why I would like to get a job as a caregiver in Canada is because it would widen my experience, expose me to a newer working environment to be able to provide my services, my ability to communicate and interact with everyone with integrity, to experience a new way of life that would offer me an opportunity to venture into a foreign country’s market especially now that my children are all grown. I have no parents to take care of and is able leave away from home. It is also and opportunity to get a more challenging and fulfilling job. This is because here in my country, very few people want to employ a professional help around the house, most people employ any young poor girl without any experience because they can pay low wages, and secondly they are easily found because of poverty. I am an honest, self motivated and hardworking woman ready to work with little supervision. I have gained enough experience and skills in child care and do assure you of responsive proper child care management in your home if you offer me this job. I am also a responsible mother, having raised my own children, and that motherly attitude every child needs. I look forward to perform my duties diligently and meet your set family’s set goals and regulations. My prayer is that you give me the job to be able to express my capability and prowess to the best of my knowledge. I look forward to receiving your consideration for the job. Pass my warm regards to the whole family. Yours faithfully, Christine Karegi
