What We Expect From Our Au Pair:

My husband and I are both architects. My husband works full time in an office downtown Chicago. I work 2 days a week from home, but do need to attend meetings out of the house occassionally. My main focus is Ben. I attend therapy with him 3 days a week and need help with the other 2. The Au Pair will be expected to attend therapy with Ben the 2 days a week that I work, and spend 3 days a week with Lucas. Lucas will attend a preschool program 5 days a week starting in September 2008. He has the option of attending all day extended care. There are days when either my husband or myself need to travel for work, and the au pair will be asked to help get the children to bed.

Family Description:

We have 2 children, Lucas is 2 1/2 years old and your typically developing 2 year old. He talks up a storm, likes to go to the park, color, do puzzles, read stories, and run after his big brother. Lucas has a big imagination and likes to "cook", and pretend to be a pirate. My son Benjamin is 5 1/2 years old, nonverbal, a child of special needs. Ben loves to swim, swing, and ride his bike, but he does not talk and has a hard time communicating his needs, wants and emotions. He attends a school for children with developmental delays, goes to Occupational and Speech Therapy. We practice a method called Floor Time and have a host of therapists and friends working with Ben all the time to help him progress. He is highly functioning, very sweet and passive.

Au Pair Letter:

Dear Au Pair: We are looking for a bright, educated person interested in working with children of special needs. While we do not expect you to be fluent with the Floor Time technique, we hope to find a compassionate and caring au pair interested in learning about children with PDD, autism, or similar developmental delays. We are hoping that the au pair has some formal education in early childhood education or with children of special needs. Most importantly, we are looking for someone with empathy, compassion and patience.
