What We Expect From Our Au Pair:
|
As our Au Pair, you would look after the kids regularly on three days per week Tue, Wed, Thur, from around 1 p.m. till 7 or 8 p.m. till we come home. Nicolas has lunch at Kindergarten and then needs to be picked up at 1 p.m., Nina is picked up from her childminder’s also in the village at 2:30. On Fridays, Volker’s parents come to look after the kids, so you’re generally free.
In the mornings, you would get up with us between 7 / 7:30 and help with getting ready / breakfast, and you would take Nina to her childminder’s 5 minute walk around 8 o’clock.
Generally, you would play with and take care of the kids, and of course assist in their upbringing.
We would like you to speak English with the kids.
Nicolas might have a couple of afternoon appointments not yet, but starting in the summer, such as gymnastics and sports. We would ask you to take him there.
You can go on little outings with the kids as you and they please, take them for a walk in the woods, to the ice cream shop not too often -, indoor-playpark, to the farm shop round the corner, etc etc.
You would run minor errands shopping and help us in the household laundry, tidying up, prep work for cooking, etc. We have a cleaning lady for the serious cleaning. Additional babysitting when needed e.g. if we want to go out a night, or if we need help on a weekend day, or sometimes, if one of us has to work on Monday.
You can get around easily by bike we also have a funky little trailer for the kids to sit in, and our area is as flat as a pancake. There is also a bus stop 1 minute from our house, buses take you to the centre of Krefeld directly in 28 mins and to the neighbouring villages for shopping, sports, etc, both lines go about twice an hour. Dusseldorf can be reached with one change bus and train. We will provide you with a pass for regional transport for the entire Dusseldorf / Krefeld region.
You would, of course, have your own bedroom, and the house has enough 3 bathrooms to cater for all our needs. You would have your own phone number and a flat rate to almost all landline numbers in Europe, overseas we need to check and internet access in your room with laptop when you need it wireless LAN in the whole house. There is also a SAT-TV incl. international programmes and DVD in your bedroom.
German courses are available both in Krefeld and Dusseldorf Fannette goes to Dusseldorf twice a week for her German class, but Krefeld would be a bit nearer.
Krefeld is a nice town with good shopping possibilities, and Dusseldorf is a city with a broad cultural offering theatre, opera, museums, festivals etc and a buzzing nightlife.

Family Description:
|
We are a family of four: Melanie 34, Volker 37, Nina 1 and Nicolas 3. Melanie works in an advertising agency in Düsseldorf and Volker runs a games shop in Krefeld and also publishes boardgames. We both work a four day week, with Monday as our day off most of the time an additional family day.
Nicolas is a cute little rascal, energetic and full of imagination. He can be a handful as all little boys can, but is generally a kindhearted child. He goes to Kindergarten nearby almost across the street. Nina has just had her first birthday in March and has just started walking, so she toddles through the house, which is extremely cute. Nicolas and Nina love each other a lot and enjoy each other’s company most of the time. Our kids are being raised bilingually, German and English, since Melanie is half Scottish and was herself raised with both languages. We would therefore like the kids to get some more English language practice with the Au Pair.
We live in Meerbusch, which belongs to the suburbs of both Duesseldorf and Krefeld, a nice, green, pleasant area just outside two big cities. We moved here last year, after having lived in the centre of Dusseldorf for 10 years – now, with the kids, it’s more important for us to have more space, more green and less traffic than to be in the centre of action.
We have a fairly large house 7 rooms with a nice garden, with enough room for family, friends etc - we like to have our dear ones around us.
We consider ourselves to be laid back, sociable and easy going :- We still enjoy going out, but don’t get round to it so often anymore.
With the kids, we enjoy going on outings nearby to the Rhine, to the woods, to fleamarkets, zoos, or whatever comes up. We would welcome you to join us whenever you want.
At the weekends, we sometimes spend a night or two in Cologne half an hour’s car ride or Bonn an hour’s car ride, with the grandparents. We use the time to see friends, and the kids enjoy being with their grandparents and / or our friends’ kids.
We have Fannette, an Au Pair from France, living with us at the moment, and that is working out nicely. She is our first Au Pair, so we were very curious about the experience, and it’s really nice and relaxed for all, especially for the kids. She speaks fluent English, which is her language of communication with the kids although we keep having to encourage Nicolas to speak English – he understands it all, but usually answers in German.
Fannette will be with us until the end of July 2008. We are looking for someone to replace her around then.

Au Pair Letter:
|
*** Come to sunny Rhineland :- ***
Dear Au Pair,
we are very much looking forward to welcoming a permanent guest in our house. We love being around people and we want our children to grow up in a sociable way, learning from other cultures and getting to know other habits. We believe you could be a valuable addition to our family, bringing new perspective and insight into a different way of life.
We are looking for someone who will love Nicolas and Nina and enjoy spending time with them, encouraging them to speak English, to develop their imagination, and to have fun – but also someone with resolution to show them their limits if need be, or help them calm down and be sensible, when they get too wild.
We enjoy being around people and like to laugh, and our social life has become much more domesticated since we and our friends have kids. So, if you feel you could be at ease in such an environment then we might just be the perfect match!
Fannette, our current Au Pair and our first so far, is enjoying herself here with us, and she offered to give first hand Au Pair information if you have any questions. We can give you her email address if you like.
We're looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Melanie, Volker, Nicolas and Nina
