What We Expect From Our Au Pair:

We are looking for a mothers help/au pair to work five days a week. 25 hours plus occasional babysitting. Would suit someone with a part time day job to eran extra money or some studying. We both work full time, away and at home, and we have three children aged 12, 10 and 8. We need help with tidying bedrooms, laundry, ironing and some food preparation in the morning. We have a cleaner already but we would need help in the kitchen. We also have two dogs and it would be very helpful if you could take them out for a walk in the week. We also need some help in the evenings around mealtimes. In return we offer you a good room with all 'mod cons' and some pocket money for the week.

Family Description:

Our family is made up of the following members: - Andrew Carpenter. Born 1958 in London. Three sisters and one brother. Educated in London and studied Mining Engineering at University. M.Sc. in Minerals. Worked for the National Coal Board for several years and then became self-employed. First selling Antique furniture and then food. Had a Delicatessen for ten years and now has four food outlets providing food for the staff at the large local hospital. Shelley Hayles. Born 1957 in Africa. Have one full brother and two half brothers. Educated all over the place and finally settled in Oxford with her mother and brother. Trained as a Nurse in the eighties then decided to become a Doctor and went to college in Oxford in 1986. Now a General Practitioner in Banbury. Works three long days a week and sometimes from home. Alexis Carpenter. Born Feb1996. Started school in January 2001. A child who is bright and lively. Can be very shy initially. Can exert her personality on occasion! Has just started senior school and will be getting there and back on her own from now on, a big step for all of us. Quite keen on athletics and will hopefully do quite a lot of sport at her new school. Esme Carpenter “Gussie”. Born Jan 1998. Very outgoing child who mixes well and can be very funny. Can be wilful but has a great sense of humour. Needs a firm hand when she decides to do something, but usually charming. Goes to a primary school in Headington with her brother and loves it. Likes horses and riding. Julius Carpenter “Archie”. Born July 2000. Attends same school as Esme full time. Very smiley and receptive. Doted on by his sisters. Quite a character and definitely a boy. Likes football and being outside. Also very keen on computer games. Not too sure what he is going to do when he grows up but might be an ‘animal watcher’.

Au Pair Letter:

Oxford is a very beautiful City that has many old buildings and rather a lot of tourist attractions. It is also very well placed geographically for seeing the rest of the country. Our house is on a main road into the city centre and we are very well served with regular buses. There is also a very good bus service that goes all over the country from the town centre, and a main line rail service to London. Travel is quite expensive in England so that may limit the distance you can go but there is still a lot to see locally. There is a strong network of au pairs in Oxford of all nationalities and if you get a job here you will meet lots of people of your own age. Most of our au pairs go out every night! You would have your own bedroom with a desk and a television, share your bathroom with the girls and the rest of the main house with us. We have a bike that our current au pair uses for getting about on locally. Job Description My main reasons for needing an au pair/mother’s help are: - • To help me get the children ready for school in the mornings. They get up about 07.00 and I need a hand getting all three fed before leaving for School at 08.25 prompt. Your duties from 07.00 would include sorting out the laundry, getting the breakfast table ready, supervising the children whilst they eat if I am not in the room, making the packed lunches if needed and getting them ready to leave. The main problem is getting out of the house on time! After we leave you have about 45 minutes of work tidying bedrooms clearing up. There is occasional ironing but not much!! in the week. I would like you to change the children’s bed linen, one bed a week on a rota, and generally keep their rooms in order. We have a cleaner twice a week so we do not need you to clean. Also if any of the children were sick we would need you to stay home that day and look after them but in three years this has only happened three times. • I would also like you to walk our two dogs each day so is important that you like animals. The park is just around the corner. • In the evenings I need the same sort of help around meals and bedtime. We all come home at about 17.30. The time varies a bit depending on who collects the children. About 16.30 our au pair often prepares some vegetables, ready before we get back home to speed things up. You will need to put the dry laundry and put on another load. I would like you to help prepare supper with Andrew if he needs it, lay the table and after supper I would like you to clear the kitchen and do the washing up. When the clearing up is done you are free for the rest of the evening. Most people are finished by 19.30. • One of us will always be around, so you will never be expected to look after the children alone unless you baby sit. All the children are usually in bed by 21.30. Your job might also includes a night of babysitting once a week by prior agreement about 1 out of 3 weekends but sometimes more if it a holiday season like Christmas, sometimes less. This is usually on a Saturday from 19.30. Most au pairs in Oxford go out together on Fridays and baby-sit on Saturdays. The weekends are free. You would need to settle in first but it is a possible option and several of our previous au pairs have worked two or three days a week, studied for language diplomas and worked for us quite happily. It really depends on how motivated you are to make the best out of all your opportunities. Once we leave the house the day would be yours. As you can see this leaves you free most of the day in the week and all weekend. In return for your work we will try to make you feel comfortable and happy and to encourage you to meet people of your own age so that you go home having had a real taste of British culture. My only “rule” is that you do not have men to stay in your room! I anticipate that the girl we choose will be happy, practical, outgoing and able to entertain herself but will come from a strong family background and be happy to live in a slightly chaotic household. Our email is shayles1@.com. Feel free to contact me if you are intrested.
