Au Pair Letter:

Dear Au Pair,
Welcome to the Heinonen Smith family! We are mother Karen Smith, big sister Sanelma Heinonen, age 10, and twins Tapio and Helena, who will be five in August. Our family dad Juha Heinonen, who we called Isi, died in October 2007 after a brief but courageous battle with kidney cancer. We miss him very much, but we are slowly adjusting to going on with life the way we know he would have wanted.
And of course, we also have Klyde the black cat, who is very relaxed and playful, and two very sweet rats named Belle and Midnight, who live in cage in Sanelma's room.
We live in a beautiful old house built in 1910 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, less than a kilometer from downtown. Ann Arbor is a small but very international city, a typical american "college town". There are tons of young people here from the university, where Karen works as a math professor, and also Au Pairs from all over the world.
Our family is multicultural: Juha was from finland and our kids are all fluent in finnish. We go to finland every summer, have a sauna, and bake traditional finnish ruis leipaa every week. But of course we live in America, and Karen is 100 American, so we are very American too.
For fun, we do a lot of outdoor activities, hiking, skiing, biking. We also enjoy family board games and reading. We have a lot of friends who drop by on a regular basis, and often host parties. Our favorite family holiday is Halloween, when we decorate the house with pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns and scary creatures.
All our kids are happy, independent and strong-willed. They love challenging outdoor activities like climbing trees, scrambling up big rocks, and running through the woods. Sanelma loves being a big sister and has run a "school" for her siblings every sunday for nearly 3 years. They love it! Tapio and Helena are best friends, and often enter their own world together. Sanelma loves school and is an excellent student. Tapio and Helena have been dying to go to "real school" for several years now.. Finally, this year, they start kindergarten, right in the same school with Sanelma.
We would like an au pair from Finland to be part of our family next year. The main qualities we hope she or he will possess are warmth of personality, a sense of humor, and an appreciation of how much fun children can be. We want her to speak Finnish with us at home, because fluency in finnish was always extremely important to Juha. We hope our Au Pair will enjoy reading a lot to the kids.
Our Au Pair will be on duty both before and after school, but will have a good chunk of the afternoon free each day, and most evenings and weekends. Some light housework is expected as well. We have a cleaning lady for more heavy cleaning every other week. This is not the Au Pair's job!.
Of course, our au pair will be welcome to come along on all our family adventures, but we hope she will find a supportive group of friends outside our home as well, and have lots of adventures with them too, maybe travelling around the country a bit. We look forward to adopting our au pair as a member of the family--- like a big sister, or a close cousin visiting for a year.
We are a fun, relaxed family.
Tervetuloa!
