What We Expect From Our Au Pair:
|
We would like you to take over from our present au-pair in August, for the duration of at least one year.
Your main job here would be taking care of Arianna who is 14 years old and who will be starting 1st year high school this fall in Arezzo. Her school schedule 6 days a week is from 8:00 - 1:00, with 4 afternoons till 4.30. Since we live about 10 minutes drive from the little train that takes her to Arezzo, Arianna needs to be driven down our country road to the local train station at 7:30am .
lf you want to hold another job or take language courses, the mornings after the train drop off would be completely free for such a purpose. She needs to be met again at the stationl at 1:30p.m. or later . Afternoons would be your time here as a companion for Arianna who basically just needs to get her homework done. She speaks English and Italian. She is very autonomous and easy, though of course a beginning teenager…..

JOB DESCRIPTION
Hi
I am American, born in California, and lived in Paris for 17 years so that I also hold a French passport. I speak English, French, Italian and German. I am a professional singer specializing in 17th and 18th century Italian and French music. I hold a teaching position in The Hague and Zurich, which involves frequent travelling. Kees, my husband, is Dutch and speaks English, Italian, French, German and of course Dutch. He plays and teaches the recorder, conducts vocal ensembles, and composes. As performing musicians, we travel a lot. Kees has a teaching position in Switzerland and Germany every other week. There are periods when we both have to be away for three or four days at a time and Arianna and the house would be entirely in your care.
When you are out here on your own, it can get somewhat lonely. This is an isolated house way out in the country. We love the quiet, but do not expect that everyone would love it as much as we do! For the right person it is heaven and for the wrong person it is just too lonely. The house is a big old Tuscan farm house. We have three cats, a dog, a lovely vegetable garden, a vineyard, and six hundred olive trees that surround the house. Kees makes wine and olive oil and works the land when he is home. The au pair studio is a large room with a beautiful view of the valley, a private entrance, and a fireplace. You share a bathroom with Arianna whose room is next door. We sleep in another wing of the house.
The nearest village, Civitella, is about five minutes drive away and the nearest good shopping town, Badia al Pino (where the train station is), is about 10 minutes drive. Arezzo, about 25 minutes drive as I said, is the nearest big city, and Florence is a 40 minute ride on the train. Siena is about a 45 minute drive by car. We give you access to a car so that you can have freedom of movement. Public transportation does not get you right to the house, but the local train gets you to Badia al Pino where you can leave a car for the day.
Financial terms are negotiable, but at present we pay our aupair her room and about half of her food which gives her the possibility of doing some cooking for herself, (there is a kitchen corner in the
au pair studio). We also pay for gas for the car, and €350 a month in cash for expenses . And you can make some extra money by cleaning the house. We will also reimburse your travel costs to get here after you have arrived and once we are sure that you are going to stay.
One disadvantage for the holding of second job is that it must be flexible enough to cover the one or two times a year when Arianna or Dani may be sick and we are not here. This would mean staying home with them and not being able to go to work.
The cats and dog need feeding and otherwise take care of themselves.
We have a swimming pool since last summer, operable from May to October…..then it gets too cold.
We ask you to give a hand with the dishes after family meals etc. You also need to help with the children’s laundry. We have a washing machine and a dryer. There is a fair amount of driving Ari back and forth from one place to another so you would absolutely need to feel comfortable driving curvy country roads and you must possess a current international driver’s license and health insurance.
I have learned that it is very hard to really imagine what it would be like to live here from this description. Past and present au pairs tell me that it is exactly as I have described it, but they still had many surprises upon arrival. I encourage you to think a lot about the country aspect and the relatively hermit-like lifestyle that we lead. You will have a lot of time on your own to read and do your own things, but you need to like that sort of thing.
